Liverpool missed out on signing 25-year-old English international Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace during the summer transfer window.
Despite completing a medical with Liverpool, Marc Guehi missed out on the move because Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute. The Eagles failed to secure a replacement for the 25-year-old and forced the player to stay at the club.
There were reports that Liverpool would return for him at the end of the season. They were not planning to sign the English international in January. However, a report by Give Me Sport has claimed that Liverpool could now perform a U-turn on their stance over a winter move for the player.
Giovanni Leoni has been sidelined for several months with ACL damage, and Liverpool now need to bring in a quality central defender in January. The Reds are left with just three reliable central defenders right now, and they cannot hope to get through the season with only three centre-backs at their disposal.
Joe Gomez has a worrying injury record and Ibrahima Konate will not be able to start every game either. It remains to be seen whether Liverpool can convince Crystal Palace with an acceptable offer for Guehi in January.
Can Liverpool sign Guehi?
The 25-year-old defender will be a free agent at the end of the season, and Crystal Palace could consider selling him for the right price. They will not want to lose a player of his quality as a free agent. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops.
Ideally, Liverpool should have signed Guehi in the summer. However, they left it late by haggling over the terms of the deal. Liverpool are now under pressure, and it will not be a surprise if Crystal Palace demand a premium for the player. Liverpool are in desperate need of a quality central defender in January.
The 25-year-old would be a quality acquisition for them. The Englishman is well-settled in the Premier League, and he has proven himself in the top-flight consistently. Guehi is certainly one of the best defenders in the Premier League right now, and he could help Liverpool improve.
The opportunity to join the Premier League champions will be exciting for the English internatioal defender as well. He will certainly hope to get the move across the line this time around if the Reds return with a bid in January.
