Kobbie Mainoo could once again force an exit from Manchester United, this time permanently, if talks over a new deal fail.
According to Give Me Sport, Manchester United still have plenty of work in the Kobbie Mainoo situation. The English midfielder could still leave the club by forcing the issue again if talks over a new deal fail, as he continues to harbor ambitions of being part of the England squad for the World Cup.
The Kobbie Mainoo situation right at the end of the window did trouble Manchester United. The player asked the club to allow him a temporary departure on loan to let him play regularly elsewhere. At that point, Ruben Amorim preferred to use him as a substitute for Bruno Fernandes, although the Portugal international usually plays full nineties.
Manchester United rejected the request and chose to keep him at the club, and the stance was strengthened by Amorim stating he views Mainoo as part of his plans. Incidentally, the club let go of other big players who were not deemed a part of the manager’s ideas for the season, as the £25,000-a-week Manchester United whizkid is still on the bench more often than not.
Napoli were interested in signing Kobbie Mainoo, while some other Premier League sides also pondered making loan approaches once the player made his stance clear. Manchester United are not considering a future departure for the midfielder as they feel he has an important role to play.
Moreover, they had been planning talks over a new deal, which reportedly stalled earlier owing to Mainoo’s huge wage demands. With fresh discussions planned, and should those fail, Kobbie Mainoo might be in a position to leave if he forces an exit from the club, as per Ben Jacobs on Give Me Sport.
Jacobs said, “My expectation is that there will be interest in Mainoo from the Premier League and Napoli as well. But I think an exit might be more likely in the summer, rather than mid-season, if he hasn’t signed a new deal in the next 12 months or so.
“The only thing I think may change that is if the player really doubles down on his position because he feels he needs to go somewhere and play in the six months leading up to the World Cup.”
How will the Kobbie Mainoo situation transpire?
Teams like Chelsea and Tottenham will be keen to sign Mainoo if he were made available in the market. However, the situation with the Manchester United whizkid, who pockets £25,000-a-week wages, is not simple enough for clubs to make a bid and get a deal in place. For starters, should contract talks fail, and that may also be a result of limited minutes under Amorim.
Kobbie Mainoo has ambitions to feature for England at the World Cup next year, and for that to happen, he needs regular minutes in this Manchester United side. Should Amorim keep using him sporadically, there might be a case of a fresh request from the player to move out of Old Trafford.
