Aston Villa, Newcastle United lose race to sign Lucas Chevalier

Aston Villa and Newcastle United have been interested in signing LOSC Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier during the summer transfer window.

A report from Graeme Bailey on TBR Football has claimed that Lucas Chevalier is heading to PSG this summer. Aston Villa and Newcastle United will be disappointed to have missed out on the 23-year-old LOSC Lille goalkeeper.

The Frenchman has been outstanding this past season for the Ligue 1 outfit, and he could have been a quality acquisition for the two Premier League clubs. He was named the Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2024/25 campaign while gaining a spot on the Team of the Year.

PSG are reportedly signing him in a deal worth around £30 million. Gianluigi Donnarumma has been linked with a move away from the club, and PSG have decided to sign Chevalier as his replacement. The French goalkeeper kept 13 clean sheets in all competitions last season, and he has the potential to develop into a world-class player.

The 23-year-old will want to compete at the highest level, and it is no surprise that he has chosen to join PSG. Les Parisiens are the biggest team in France, and they have recently won the Premier League title and the UEFA Champions League. They will be able to provide the 23-year-old with the platform to fight for trophies regularly.

Aston Villa and Newcastle United could use a quality goalkeeper

It will be interesting to see if Aston Villa and Newcastle United move on to other targets. Emiliano Martinez has been linked with a move away from the club, and Aston Villa will need to replace him properly. The Argentine international has been a world-class performer for them, and replacing him will not be easy.

On the other hand, Newcastle United need a long-term replacement for Nick Pope. They were hoping to sign James Trafford, but Manchester City have hijacked their move for the 22-year-old goalkeeper. Newcastle United need a quality goalkeeper, and Chevalier would have been a superb acquisition.

Both Premier League clubs have quality squads, and they will look to fight for European qualification next season. They need to plug the gaps in their squad, and a reliable goalkeeper could make a huge difference. It remains to be seen who they end up signing.
