Tottenham failed with late move to sign Santiago Gimenez

Tottenham reportedly failed with a late move for Santiago Gimenez, who chose to join AC Milan and has been shining in Italy.

According to Calcio Mercato, Tottenham reportedly attempted to sign Santiago Gimenez late in the January window before the Mexican sealed his transfer to AC Milan. The north Londoners have endured an injury-ravaged season on all fronts and may have attempted to sign the former Feyenoord star following Dominik Solanke’s knee issue.

Ange Postecoglu was unsympathetic towards his counterpart Ruben Amorim over the many injuries Manchester United had as they lost to Tottenham. The Spurs boss said he wanted to see how the Portuguese man fares with these fitness issues for two months at a stretch, something he has done and continues to endure in north London.

Defensive injuries have been the central talking point at Tottenham during their disastrous run over the last few months. While the focus was on conceding goals, Spurs also suffered a dip in the attacking third as they had some key injuries to contend with their strikers and wide attackers. Postecoglou wanted to bring in a new forward before the January window ended, as Spurs concluded by signing Mathys Tel on loan

Before the Bayern Munich man arrived, they had sights on other names, including Brentford’s Yoanne Wissa, while they also considered Santiago Gimenez from Feyenoord. Before the Mexican made his move to AC Milan, where he has thrived since arriving there, Spurs were among the teams who had contacted for the striker

Gimenez has scored two goals in as many Serie A games since joining AC Milan, but it could have been very different had Spurs succeeded in their late attempts to sign the striker. The Mexican has hit 18 goals this season across all competitions and certainly merited the significant interest of top clubs, although he was reportedly keen on joining AC Milan among the suitors that circled around for his signature.

Forward injuries forced Spurs into the market for a striker

Spurs are still short on numbers in the attack, although there were some respite with the returns of Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert. Dominic Solanke’s injury could have been the catalyst in Tottenham dipping into the transfer market after the striker was ruled out until mid-March.

Incidentally, their decision to sign Mathys Tel might have been the right one, considering Richarlison has suffered a fresh problem that will keep him out until mid-March. Tottenham may have wanted the prolific 18-goal striker from Feyenoord, but they did well to pivot from the idea that late in the window to sign Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich on loan.
