Newcastle United have reportedly reached an agreement with MLS club Atlanta United for attacker Miguel Almiron.
According to Monumental AM 1080 via X, Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron is on the verge of rejoining Atlanta United in a deal worth $12 million. The Paraguayan international has agreed to a four-year contract with his former side, marking a return to the club he left for the Premier League in 2019.
A new adventure beckons Miguel Almiron
Almiron, 30, has struggled to secure regular playing time under Newcastle manager Eddie Howe this season, featuring in just 150 minutes of Premier League action. Despite making 223 appearances for Newcastle United and contributing 30 goals and 12 assists, the experienced attacker has fallen out of favour and is seeking a fresh start.
The versatile winger’s move back to Atlanta United comes almost five years after he initially left the Five Stripes for a then-club-record transfer to Newcastle. During his first stint with Atlanta, the winger was instrumental in their 2018 MLS Cup triumph, and his return is expected to bring experience and flair to the side.
The move has been facilitated by Newcastle’s openness to cash in on the player, who has less than 18 months remaining on his current contract. Atlanta United, looking to bolster their squad, have finalised a verbal agreement for the transfer.
Who will replace Almiron?
With Almiron’s departure, Newcastle could explore options for a replacement in the final days of the winter transfer window. Turkish forward Semih Kilicsoy, currently playing for Besiktas, has emerged as a potential target for the Magpies, according to reports.
However, Newcastle United may also choose to rely on their current squad depth, given their strong form this season. Eddie Howe’s men have won seven of their last eight Premier League matches, placing them fifth in the Premier League table, level on points with fourth-placed Manchester City.
The club’s immediate focus will be on their upcoming fixtures against Fulham in the Premier League and Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg. Whether Newcastle opt to reinforce their squad or stick with their in-form lineup remains to be seen.
Almirpn’s return to Atlanta United is a win-win scenario. For the player, it is an opportunity to rediscover his best form in familiar surroundings, while Atlanta gain a seasoned professional who can immediately enhance their attacking options.
For Newcastle, the transfer provides financial flexibility and clears space for potential new arrivals, aligning with Eddie Howe’s evolving vision for the team. As Almiron prepares to bid farewell to the Premier League, his contributions to Newcastle will be remembered, and his return to MLS could reignite his career on a high note.
