Aston Villa have taken the initial steps towards signing Celta Vigo defensive star Oscar Mingueza in January.
Aston Villa are looking to add more depth as well as quality to their backline in the ongoing transfer window and they are interested in the services of Oscar Mingueza.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Unai Emery’s team are exploring a potential transfer for the Celta Vigo star. They have identified him as the main target for the winter transfer window.
Mingueza came up the ranks at La Masia and was a part of Barcelona’s first team for two seasons before parting ways with the club in the summer of 2022 in search of regular minutes.
Things might not have worked out for him at the Catalan club but the 25-year-old has certainly made quite a name for himself with his consistent performances at Celta Vigo.
While the Spanish international prefers playing on the right flank, he is quite effective on the opposite flank. Mingueza is comfortable playing as a full-back as well as a wing-back and he has been one of the standout performers for Celta this season.
Villa pushing for Mingueza’s signature
In his 17 league outings, the former Barcelona star has two goals and five assists. His performances haven’t gone unnoticed as Aston Villa seem to be quite impressed with what they have seen. The Premier League outfit only has Matty Cash as their out-and-out right-back option and they are looking to add more depth in that position in the ongoing window.
Mingueza is quite high on their wishlist as he is appreciated by Villa’s board as well as manager Unai Emery who has strong links in Spain. Emery loves working with versatile stars and the Celta defender could be a great addition to his squad as he can help out on both flanks.
The English outfit have already started laying the groundwork for a potential transfer. They are in talks as they look to explore more about a potential transfer. While nothing advanced has happened so far, Villa consider him their main target for January and it will be interesting to see how things pan out.
