Manchester United are set to part company with chief goalkeeping scout Tony Coton after Ruben Amorim expressed his displeasure about his keepers.
According to a report by Football Insider, Manchester United’s chief goalkeeping scout, Tony Coton, is set to get the sack as INEOS continues their drive to be more efficient. Ruben Amorim is unhappy with his current goalkeeping choices, as Coton could bear the brunt of this problem.
There is no respite for Ruben Amorim since taking over as the new Manchester United manager, as he continues to find common ground with the squad at his disposal. The Red Devils have suffered three consecutive defeats in all competitions, with the latest of those coming against Wolves on Boxing Day.
One of the goals conceded in that game came directly from a corner, which was also a repeat of the situation against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup. With that tremendous effort from Wolves man Matheus Cunha, both goalkeepers Altay Biyandir and Andre Onana have conceded identical goals of that sort. However, there is a wider discussion around keepers reacting to corner situations, which has been abysmal under Amorim.
Overall, Amorim is not satisfied with either goalkeeper, as there are already active links to new options in the market, although any move might only materialise in the summer. Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel is a big target, while Brentford’s Bart Verbruggen is also under consideration.
However, in a bid to change the outlook towards the situation with shot-stoppers, Manchester United are set to sack chief goalkeeping scout, Tony Coton, with the sack senior backroom staff set to leave his role soon. The long-serving, experienced Coton has been integral in recruiting both the current keepers in Onana and Biyandir.
Tony Coton to leave Manchester United?
INEOS have continued to make cuts within the club’s system and the chief goalkeeping scout Coton might be the next in line. They have also parted company with Dan Ashworth, with the search to find suitable repalcements already underway.
As for Tony Coton, he spent a chunk of his time between 1997 and 2007 as the club’s goalkeeping coach and re-joined Manchester United back in 2020 as chief goalkeeping scout. Once he receives his marching orders, INEOS will look for a suitable replacement in his place as they look to be more efficient with the scouting as well as performances on the pitch.
