Manchester United are discussing a new deal with Harry Maguire, with the defender indicating the positive route of those talks.
According to The Guardian, Harry Maguire has held ‘positive’ talks over a contract extension with his club. The resurgent Manchester United star has had some good performances under new manager Ruben Amorim, which could prompt a new deal that could take him into his seventh and eighth season at Old Trafford.
Ever since Erik ten Hag took over at Manchester United, Harry Maguire’s career has looked down and out at Old Trafford. Yet, the defender has managed to outlast the Dutchman, who was sacked following a disastrous start to the new campaign and replaced by Ruben Amorim.
Amorim has taken his time to choose his preferred eleven, and so far, Maguire is a part of the back three the Portuguese likes to deploy. With Manchester United signing two defenders to play centrally in Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, speculation firmly pointed at Maguire to leave the club.
While he stayed at the club, rumours have since circulated about a January departure, although things for the defender might have turned. Maguire has confirmed talks over a new deal with the club that could see him play at Old Trafford for a seventh and potentially even an eighth season.
Maguire has no interest in leaving in January, and in terms of what he brings, the club should not even be thinking about selling anyway. The defender has suggested talks with M<anchester United have been ‘positive’ as he seems open to penning a new contract to prolong his stay at Old Trafford.
Maguire said, “All the signs are positive at the moment, and the chat that I’m having is really positive. “I’ve still got this year to go with an option in their hands.”
A new deal for Maguire would makes sense
Amorim likes physically imposing defenders, and there are only a handful in the league that can match Maguire’s stature in that aspect. Some reports stated that he was waiting for Ten Hag’s dismissal before deciding on his future. Under Amorim, he is getting enough chances to prove his worth, as he was trusted to handle the Manchester City frontline on Sunday.
Maguire’s current deal expires next summer, although the club are expected to trigger a one year extension in his contract, which might happen this month. Beyond that, a new deal would be until 2027, meaning he could play his seventh and eighth seasons here. Keeping him would make sense as the defender is at the peak of his powers as things stand and could offer big performances when needed.
