Manchester United are reportedly well placed to re-sign Alvaro Fernandez Carreras and beat Barcelona and Real Madrid to the 21-year-old Spaniard due to a buyback clause.
According to a report by Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Alvaro Fernandez Carreras is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils want to re-sign the Spaniard as they look to bolster their left-back options. Meanwhile, the SL Benfica defender is also a target for Barcelona and Real Madrid. However, the Premier League giants are well placed to land his signature due to a buyback clause.
The rise of Alvaro Fernandez Carreras at Benfica
Alvaro Fernandez Carreras has established himself as one of the best young full-back prospects in the world since joining SL Benfica from Manchester United. While the Spanish defender showed potential during his spell with the Red Devils, he could break into their first-team squad.
Instead, the 21-year-old embarked on multiple loan spells before Benfica secured his services. The Eagles initially signed him on loan in January 2024 before completing a permanent deal in the subsequent summer transfer window. Carreras has turned out 16 times thus far this term while chipping in with two goals and two assists. Meanwhile, the youngster’s progress has alerted European bigwigs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Manchester United.
A man in demand
Barcelona’s interest in the Spaniard is understandable. The Catalan giants are scouring the market for a left-back, even though Alejandro Balde has been solid since breaking into the first-team squad. However, with the seasons getting longer, Hansi Flick wants multiple options for every position, making Carreras a viable target.
Meanwhile, Alvaro Fernandez Carreras was on Real Madrid’s books during his youth career before he joined Manchester United. With Los Blancos scouring the market for a left-back amid Ferland Mendy’s inconsistencies, the SL Benfica defender is an option worth considering. Recent reports have claimed that the Spanish full-back prefers rejoining Real Madrid instead of Manchester United.
As for Manchester United, Ruben Amorim wants the Premier League club to re-sign Carreras from SL Benfica. The Red Devils will dip their toes in the market for a left-back next year amid Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s fitness issues. So, the Spaniard has emerged as a viable target, with Manchester United well placed to beat Barcelona and Real Madrid to his signature.
The Red Devils can re-sign the 21-year-old full-back due to a buyback clause worth €20 million. That takes the matter out of Benfica, Barcelona, and Real Madrid’s hands if Carreras agrees to rejoin Manchester United. However, a deal will unlikely see the light of day before the 2025 summer transfer window.
