Tottenham Hotspur could have made a dramatic U-turn and decided against offering Son Heung-min a new deal to prolong his career.
According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Tottenham are not planning to hand Son Heung-min a new deal, with his current contract expiring next summer. The South Korean has spent nine seasons at the club, and there has probably been a dramatic U-turn from the club as they reported having plans to open talks about a new agreement.
In the nine seasons Son Heung-min has been at Tottenham, he has established himself as one of their best players as well as one in the Premier League. The South Korean has played 417 times in all competitions for Spurs, scoring 165 goals and providing 87 assists during this spell.
His current deal expires at the end of the season, and so far, there has been no movement regarding a contract renewal. Spurs are keen to trigger an extension in his present agreement, which will push his stay until 2026, allowing the club to demand a decent fee next summer if they are open to selling him then.
That might be the case, as the report states that Tottenham has made a dramatic U-turn in its plans to offer Son a new contract. The £190,000-a-week star, who has been with the club for nine seasons, has been performing at a top level, even this season when he has endured a few injury issues to deal with.
The idea of not making a contract offer to the South Korean might generate mixed reactions, as some fans believe the 32-year-old is past his best. Others, however, feel his experience and the levels he is performing at remain vital for a side still finding its feet under a new manager. Either way, the extension Spurs are planning to trigger will ensure they will get a transfer fee that is decent enough in the market next summer.
Son to leave Tottenham?
The signs are clear that Son Heung-min might be allowed to leave Tottenham next summer. If Spurs have indeed decided against not offering him a new deal, it might have been a slight mistake on their part, given his quality on the pitch. Moreover, they will have to bear a significant cost to replace a player of his quality, as they are keen on Jamie Bynoe-Gittens from Borussia Dortmund, who will end up costing more than £50 million.
Should Son decide to leave Tottenham, he will have his suitors waiting in the wings, as Saudi Pro League clubs are keen to sign him. Some European outfits, as well as English bigwigs, might make their presence felt, although the Middle-Eastern sides might have more of a chance.
