Arne Slot’s Liverpool want to sign a new central defender when the transfer window reopens in January.
Liverpool want to reinforce their squad in January and according to a report from Football Insider, the Reds want to add a new central defender to the mix. They have already started laying the groundwork to bring in a top-level defender in the winter transfer window.
Arne Slot has done an exceptional job at the Merseyside club. Not many expected the club to be top of the Premier League table ten games into the new season following the departure of Jurgen Klopp. But, Slot seems to have taken over in the best possible way.
The team is firing on all cylinders and they are on track to challenge for the league title. In order to ensure they can maintain their good star, the Reds are looking to make significant investments into the squad in the upcoming window.
Federico Chiesa was the only player to have arrived at Anfield during the summer window. The Merseyside club had a relatively quiet transfer window and they reportedly have decent funds to make some key additions in January.
Liverpool seek defensive reinforcement
While their priority is to bring in a new defensive midfielder, the report suggests the Reds are working hard to sign a new centre-back. Slot seeks more depth and quality at the back and Liverpool have started laying the groundwork to sign a top defender.
They are aware of the fact that signing a world-class defender in January will be difficult. But, their transfer team is working hard to ensure they can strengthen Slot’s team. They have started looking at potential targets who could bolster their squad which already consists of Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, Jarell Quansah and skipper Virgil van Dijk.
While the Dutch defender’s contract is running out, this move has nothing to do with his future. The Reds want to keep hold of Van Dijk, they are planning to extend his stay and at the same time bring in a new centre-back in January.
