Manchester United reportedly failed to lure VfB Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness to Old Trafford during the summer.
According to a report from Sport Bild, Manchester United did make an attempt to sign Sebastian Hoeness as their next boss before they ended up extending Erik ten Hag’s contract in the summer. While they did hold talks with the VfB Stuttgart boss, he declined the opportunity to move to Old Trafford.
While Ten Hag had guided United to the FA Cup title by defeating arch-rivals Manchester City, his future was still uncertain, and the club chiefs were on the lookout for an ideal candidate who could replace the Dutch manager.
The Red Devils held talks with a few of their top targets, and Hoeness was one of the names on their wishlist. The 42-year-old has done wonders at Stuttgart. He guided them to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga last season and in the process ended up getting them into the Champions League.
Apart from the team’s overall success, his style of play had attracted interest from Manchester United. They considered him an ideal candidate for the long run and wanted him to be their next boss. While they knocked on the former TSG Hoffenheim manager’s door and enquired about his interest in taking the job at Old Trafford, the German manager turned down the offer.
Why Hoeness is keen on staying at Stuttgart?
He was flattered by the interest from the record Premier League winners. But no concrete negotiations took place as he had politely turned down the opportunity at the first time of asking. Hoeness is keen on doing wonders at Stuttgart, and he has a story at the club that is far from over.
His father Dieter Hoeness became German champion as the manager of Stuttgart back in 1992, which has special significance in his memory. He wants to build on the success they had last season. More importantly, he came up the ranks at the club and wants to write history with them as a manager.
While he did turn down the Red Devils during the summer, they could try again in the near future as Erik ten Hag once again finds himself under immense pressure. However, Hoeness is unlikely to leave Stuttgart, believing he has unfinished business at the club.
