Angel Gomes has refused to rule out a return to Manchester United as the England international is close to leaving LOSC Lille as a free agent next summer.
Manchester United may have a big chance to re-sign Angel Gomes next summer as the player does not rule out a return to the club. The 24-year-old midfielder will be free to leave Ligue 1 club LOSC Lille next summer when his current deal expires there, with many other Premier League clubs on alert regarding his situation.
Angel Gomes has seen an exponential rise in stature following a recent call-up to the England squad. He played in both their games during the previous international break and could be set for another pair of appearances as Lee Carsley has named him in his group once again.
The midfielder is angling for a move to the Premier League as his LOSC Lille contract expires. Despite efforts from the Ligue 1 outfit to renew his deal, Gomes is leaning towards leaving the club on a Bosman move next summer.
Newcastle United are angling a January move for the 24-year-old midfielder, while there is credible interest from Manchester United. It was the Red Devils that Gomes left on a free agent despite the club wanting to keep him, and now he could make a return to Old Trafford.
Other clubs are monitoring his situation, and should he continue rising within the English ranks, there might be a battle of sorts to get his signature next summer or even in January. However, the 24-year-old does not rule out a move back to Manchester United, as he explains on his comments on the The Times that a return would be sentimental.
Gomes said, “There’ll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course it’d be difficult to say no. As amazing as it would be, after finding happiness abroad I know playing in the Premier League is not the be-all and end-all.”
Given that Manchester United, now managed by INEOS, the Sir Jim Ratcliffe-led unit, has put certain policies in place regarding transfers. Their age criteria might push them towards a target like Gomes, as this signing on a free transfer would make a lot of sense.
There are still some doubts about whether he fits them stylistically, although his profile as an attacking midfielder would suit them in their bid to replace Christian Eriksen in the long term. Hence, a move back to Old Trafford could be on the cards, as the player’s preference might give Manchester United the edge in the chase.
