But, this time around, they do not really have any option other than to enter the market to reinforce their backline. According to a report from Fichajes, Los Blancos are looking to knock on the doors of Liverpool to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold in January.
The English international has come up the ranks at the Merseyside club and has been a key part of their first team since 2016. The 26-year-old full-back was integral to all the success they had during Jurgen Klopp’s time at the club.
While the Englishman is still one of the first names on the team sheet under Arne Slot, his long-term future is uncertain. Alexander-Arnold’s contract with Liverpool runs out at the end of the season, and he is yet to pen an extension. The Reds will try their best to extend his stay, but time is running out for them.
Real Madrid could look to make the most out of his contract situation. With Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez on the wrong side of 30, the team in white were looking to sign him on a free transfer next summer. But, Carvajal has picked a serious injury, which will keep him out of action for at least a year.

As per the report, Los Blancos will look to negotiate an affordable transfer which could cost them around €10-12 million. With the prospect of the 26-year-old leaving for nothing next summer, the Reds could accept the offer.
Liverpool are aware that if they do not extend his stay before the turn of the calendar, there is a high chance of him leaving for free. Rather than losing him for nothing, they could prefer to raise a decent fee from his departure. But, given his importance in the team, a mid-season deal still looks quite complicated.
