Manchester United open to selling Harry Maguire in January

Manchester United are reportedly hoping to sell Harry Maguire when the transfer window reopens in January.

Manchester United will not want to lose Harry Maguire as a free agent at the end of this season. So, they will look to find a suitable destination for him in January. According to a report by Football Insider, the Red Devils want to recoup some money from his departure.

The Manchester United defender earns £190,000-a-week wages at the club, and it is fair to assume that he will have to accept a major pay cut for any move to go through. It is highly unlikely that any club would be willing to pay him that kind of money.

Maguire is a squad player for Manchester United, and he is in his thirties. He will only regress with time, and no club will want to pay him premium wages. It will be interesting to see if any club is willing to provide him with an exit route in january.

The experienced English defender was heavily linked with West Ham United in 2023. But the move collapsed because of his wage demands. Manchester United will certainly be fearful of a similar issue in January as well. Ideally, Maguire should accept a pay cut and move on in search of regular football.

It is evident that he does not have a future at Manchester United and he is unwanted at the club in the long term. He needs to leave them and join a club where he will be a key player. There is no doubt that the 31-year-old is still good enough to play for most clubs in the league. He could be an important player for most mid-table clubs. Given his contract situation, he will be available for a nominal price as well. He could prove to be a bargain for the right team.

Maguire would be a quality addition

Plenty of mid-table clubs could use defensive reinforcements after a disappointing start to the season, and Maguire will help them tighten up at the back. His experience and leadership qualities could prove to be invaluable as well.

The Englishman has proven his quality in the Premier League over the years with Manchester United and Leicester City. It remains to be seen where he ends up eventually. Meanwhile, Manchester United have already brought in defensive reinforcements in recent windows and they will look to improve the squad further in the coming months.

Getting rid of their fringe players will free up the wage bill and allow them to bring in upgrades. Recent reports have linked Manchester United with a few more centre-backs, including long-term target Jarrad Branthwaite.
