Paul Robinson has tipped Virgil van Dijk to sign a new deal at Liverpool, as the former goalkeeper wants to pair Marc Guehi with the Dutchman.
Liverpool continued their impressive form in the Premier League, after registering their fifth win of the season in six games. After Saturday’s action, they are top of the standings with a single-point advantage over Manchester City and Arsenal.
Even if Liverpool are flying this season, there are many underlying concerns with the squad, especially with the futures of key stars. Virgin van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold could end up signing new deals at the club, as things stand, they are running down the last year of their existing contracts.
Defensively, losing Van Dijk will be a big blow for Arne Slot and Liverpool, as the Dutchman continues to put in performances of the highest level. The centre-back has been the bedrock of Jurgen Klopp’s time at the club and has continued to prove his importance under his compatriot Arne Slot.
Hence, Liverpool may find it really difficult to replace the Dutchman, with Van Dijk already attracting big interest from Italy. Juventus and Inter Milan are keen to sign him next summer on a free transfer, but Liverpool are also trying to tie him down to a new contract before January.
Former Tottenham goalkeeper, Paul Robinson on Football Insider has now tipped Van Dijk to sign a new contract at Liverpool. The former England international talked up about a dream partnership of the Dutchman and Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, as he believes there’s no reason for Van Dijk to not renew at Anfield.
Robinson said, “You put him alongside Virgil van Dijk, that looks like a great partnership, doesn’t it”.
“You’re never too old to learn, you never stop learning.”
“So to have to play alongside somebody like van Dijk, to pick up his habits, to learn his communication, to learn the way that his positional sense is, different things.
“Yeah, as a pairing, if Van Dijk, I can’t see a reason why Liverpool wouldn’t extend Van Dijk for another year if he wanted it. From what I hear, that will happen.
“So to have them as a pair next season would be a very good option for me.”
Guehi would love to play for Liverpool as per a recent report, and surely he and Van Dijk for a few years at least would make Liverpool strong at the back. The Crystal Palace man would be an expensive acquisition if Arne Slot decides to buy him at some stage next summer.
Liverpool also have other targets should Van Dijk depart next summer, however, the prospect of signing Guehi must not be ignored. Only time will tell whether Robinso’s dream pairing becomes a reality, as for now, Van Dijk is still nowhere close to signing a new deal at the club.
