Adrien Rabiot wage demands put off Premier League clubs

Adrien Rabiot’s Premier League move collapsed due to his lofty wage demands despite interest from Manchester United and Newcastle United.

Adrien Rabiot’s future was one of the biggest talking points throughout the summer as the French international was a free agent. He was linked with some of the biggest clubs in the world but the former Juventus star eventually ended up joining Olympique Marseille.

The PSG graduate finally ended up putting pen to paper and the deal to return to Ligue 1 was made on Tuesday (17th September). But, before he agreed to join Marseille, the 29-year-old was keen on a move to the Premier League. According to Fabrizio Romano via CaughtOffside, he could secure a move to the English top flight because of his lofty wage demands.

There was interest in his services from Manchester United as well as Newcastle United. But, the French international was seeking a long-term deal with massive wages which neither club were ready to offer him.

Romano on Rabiot’s failed move to England

The Italian transfer expert said: “There were big, very big proposals from Turkey and Saudi but he only wanted to play in one of the European top leagues,”

“The Premier League was his dream but his salary requests were considered too expensive. OM have been excellent at working behind the scenes and getting it done for a reduced salary, convincing Rabiot of their project.”

Rabiot joined Juventus as a free agent back in 2019. While he found it difficult to settle in at the Turin-based club, he eventually managed to establish himself as one of their mainstays and even did wonders for France on the international stage.

Rabiot couldn’t secure his dream Premier League move

While the Old Lady were keen on having him around for a few more years, Rabiot parted ways at the start of the summer following the expiry of his deal. He was offered massive contracts from the Middle East and Turkiye. But, the 29-year-old wanted to remain in Europe’s top five leagues.

His dream was to join the Premier League where Manchester United and Newcastle United were keen on his services. The Red Devils wanted more depth in the centre of the park following the departure of Sofyan Amrabat and Scott McTominay. With Casemiro struggling for form, the French international was a top target.

Eddie Howe was also keen on adding more firepower to his midfield and Rabiot could have been a sensational signing for them. But, neither club could go ahead with the deal because of the French star’s lofty wage demands. After those moves collapsed he ended up joining Marseille on a reduced salary.
