Liverpool fail with approach to sign Alan Varela

Liverpool were reportedly keen on signing 23-year-old Argentine midfielder Alan Varela from FC Porto this summer.

A report from Argentine outlet TYC Sports has claimed that Liverpool made an approach for Argentine midfielder Alan Varela. However, the Reds have been told to pay €90 million for him. It seems highly unlikely that Liverpool will activate his release clause on deadline day.

Meanwhile, a report from Give Me Sport has revealed that the Merseyside outfit have not made any move to sign the South American midfielder from FC Porto. It remains to be seen how the situation develops.

The 23-year-old has been a reliable defensive midfielder for Porto joining the club, and he would have been the ideal acquisition for the Premier League side. Liverpool have been crying out for a quality defensive midfielder ever since the departure of Fabinho. Although Wataru Endo has done a solid job since joining them, Liverpool need better players if they want to win major trophies.

Varela would have been a quality addition

Alan Varela has the potential to develop into a top-class player, and he could have formed a quality partnership at the base of the Liverpool midfield along with his compatriot Alexis Mac Allister. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool decide to move on to other targets now.

The Reds need to improve their midfield unit before the summer transfer window closes. They were already lacking in depth and quality in that department, and they have now lost Thiago Alcantara as well, who left the club at the end of last season. In addition, the promising young Stefan Bajcetic is heading to Red Bull Salzburg.

Liverpool will need to plug the weaknesses in their side if they want to challenge Arsenal and Manchester City this season. They are one of the biggest clubs in the world and they are expected to fight for major trophies consistently.

It has been an underwhelming window for Liverpool so far, and it will be interesting to see if Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes can step up and bring in a couple of additions before the summer transfer window closes later today.

Meanwhile, Varela will certainly be disappointed to miss out on a move to Liverpool. He would have hoped to join the Premier League club and prove his quality in English football. Regular football in England could have accelerated his development and helped him fulfil his world class potential.
