Jason Cundy believes Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool while giving mixed reactions to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk’s futures.
There is an ongoing debate around Liverpool Football Club regarding the futures of a few of their key stars. Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold have all entered the final year of their respective deals at Anfield, and Arne Slot has a danger looming about the prospect of the trio departing.
In Salah’s case, Liverpool have kept the channels open about a considerable sale should the right offer arrive, although none have been forthcoming. The feeling from Saudi Arabia is that they would instead sign him on a free transfer next season, with the Egyptian also getting a lucrative deal, than when moving as a Bosman.
Liverpool have also reached a point in their transfer window that they will find it challenging to replace Salah should he leave at this stage. The same goes for van Dijk, who has Saudi interest, and Alexander-Arnold, as the Liverpool trio’s futures remain uncertain.
The Liverpool trio are expected to stay at the club for the current season, although their long-term careers here have come into question. The Merseysiders are moving in the right direction with Alexander-Arnold’s contract, although the right-back has massive suitors in the form of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
Now, ex-Chelsea and Tottenham defender Jason Cundy, in his comments that appeared on TBR via talkSPORT, felt that Salah would leave the club after Arne Slot’s first season. He also gave mixed responses about van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold, although he was a bit more optimistic about the latter staying put at Anfield.
Cundy said, “I think Salah will go. I think Trent will sign. Van Dijk is a tough one actually. How much appetite is there for both parties to get that done? You would have thought that both would want to get it done. I just get the feeling maybe Salah is coming towards the end. I don’t know that, but I just get the feeling.”
Recently, Liverpool legend Graeme Souness commented that van Dijk and Salah will run down their contracts, although he remained optimistic about Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool needs to find solutions to their futures, as losing all three would be a bitter blow to manage next summer.
Arne Slot’s comments following Liverpool’s win over Ipswich Town suggested he believed Salah could go on to play many more years at the top level. Whether that is a hint at Liverpool’s plan to offer the Egyptian a new deal remains to be seen.
As things stand, the Liverpool trio are in real danger of leaving the club at the end of the current season. They have been the pillars of success under former boss Jurgen Klopp, and replacing them will be a massive task for the Merseysiders.
