Liverpool not planning to sign a midfielder
Jurgen Klopp was adamant about signing a new holding midfielder last summer when they experienced rejections from top targets Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo. Even in 2022, they failed to bring in a solid midfielder and ended up signing Arthur Melo at the last minute. They did something similar last summer with the arrival of Wataru Endo.
The club does not believe that the Japanese international is a suitable player for their cause. However, after Martin Zubimendi rejected a move to Liverpool, they suffered a setback this summer. Yet, the club are not planning on a rushed midfield signing to add another player that may not suit their system.
In the aftermath of the Zubimendi decision, Liverpool is planning on keeping Endo at the club, although any late arrival could see the Japanese star leave for a respectable offer. In any case, Liverpool is not actively looking to bring a new midfield signing, as they believe in not taking unwanted risks with their transfer plans.
They are open to waiting until January to reassess their current midfield situation. Arne Slot’s post-match comments after their 2-0 win over Ipswich Town suggested he’s happy with his squad’s current options and believes multiple players can play the No.6 role.
Does Liverpool have midfielders in the No.6 role?
Last season, they lost Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to the Saudi Pro League, and only Endo came in as a replacement. They also have Stefan Bajcetic, although the club might offload him with La Liga teams trailing his signature either on loan or on a permanent deal. Alexis Mac Allister played in the No.6 role for a long time in the previous campaign and could become an option for Arne Slot this season.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones were also used in that role in pre-season, although Arne Slot could revert to a double-pivot at the weekend until January. The system works with Liverpool’s existing options, as the club is not prepared to make an unwanted signing just to sign a defensive midfielder.
