Manchester United have been linked with a move for Denmark international midfielder Morten Hjulmand this summer.
According to a report by Correio da Manha via Sport Witness, Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim is uninterested in sanctioning the departure of Morten Hjulmand, and the update will come as a major blow for Manchester United, who were hoping to sign the Danish midfield powerhouse.
The Red Devils need to sign a quality defensive midfielder, and Hjulmand would have been a quality acquisition for them. The 25-year-old has proven himself in Portugal, and he has the quality to succeed in England as well. The midfielder would have added physicality, defensive cover and work rate to the Manchester United midfield.
Casemiro had an underwhelming 2023/24 season, and Manchester United need alternatives. Morten Hjulmand emerged as a viable target for them, and he could have replaced the Brazilian international in the long run.
Will Manchester United be able to sign Morten Hjulmand?
The midfield powerhouse has an €80 million release clause in his contract, and Sporting CP will be powerless to stop him from leaving if Manchester United decide to pay up. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops.
With that said, €80 million for Hjulmand will be overpaying. So, Manchester United will hope to sign in for a more reasonable amount. It will be interesting to see if they can convince Amorim, and Sporting CP to accept an offer for the player this summer.
Manchester United must improve their midfield options if they are serious about competing for the league title next season. Arsenal and Manchester City have better squads at their disposal, and Manchester United will need to bridge that gap with quality signings.
Meanwhile, the Denmark international will be tempted to move to the Premier League as it would be an exciting opportunity for him. The Dane has proven himself in Portugal, and he will look to test his quality in England now.
