Newcastle United are considering an approach for Thomas Frank as a potential replacement for England-linked Eddie Howe.
According to Give Me Sport, Newcastle United have included Thomas Frank on their shortlist of targets to replace England-linked Eddie Howe. The Brentford manager has been a tremendous performer over the years in the Premier League, and the Magpies are not planning to block Howe’s potential exit from the club.
Thomas Frank to replace Eddie Howe?
Newcastle United entered the summer window with the clear intention of continuing their project with Eddie Howe at the helm. However, Gareth Southgate’s decision to quit his post as England manager after their Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain may bring some change to the Magpies’ plans, as Howe is being heavily linked with the England job.
England have a few notable candidates, such as Howe and Graham Potter, with the former considered a slight favourite to succeed Southgate. The Newcastle United boss is reportedly considering the chance to take over as England boss, and should that happen, the Magpies might have to plan for his succession.
In the meantime, Newcastle United are drawing up their own shortlist to replace Howe should he depart. Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna and Brentford’s Thomas Frank are high on their list, although the former only signed a new deal with the newly-promoted Premier League side, which would put the 50-year-old Premier League manager of Brentford high on their list.
Given the gulf between Newcastle United and Brentford, it seems evident that Frank might be interested. The 50-year-old also featured on Chelsea’s shortlist earlier when they sacked Mauricio Pochettino, who also happens to be part of Newcastle United’s thinking about whether Howe should depart.
Newcastle United will not block Howe’s move
Newcastle United are keen on keeping hold of Howe this summer as they have no doubts about his ability to take the project forward. However, should the FA contact their manager and he agrees to take over Southgate, the Magpies will not block his move.
There is a sense of calmness in this whole process, as neither side is jumping the gun and making a hasty appointment. For now, Howe remains linked with the England job, although his sole focus will be with Newcastle United as they prepare for the new season ahead.
