Aston Villa are close to signing Everton midfield mainstay Amadou Onana in a deal worth £50 million amidst Barcelona links.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are closing in on a massive signing as they look all set to bring Amadou Onana to Villa Park this summer. While Barcelona were interested in the Belgian international’s signature, they have decided to take a back seat which has given the Spanish manager’s team are clear way.
Onana came into the limelight on the back of his performances for French club LOSC Lille. Those performances resulted in a bid money move to Everton in the summer of 2022. While the Toffees haven’t really had the best of times in the last 24 months, their Belgian ace surely has been one of their standout performers.
Last season, the defensive midfielder was involved in 37 matches and he even contributed towards four goals. He was a part of the Belgian squad for Euro 2024 which ended with a defeat to France in the round of 16.
Everton willing to sell Onana
While he still has three years left on his deal with Everton and they would love to have him around for years to come, the Toffees are willing to sanction his departure.
They do not really have any funds to reinforce their squad and a major departure can only help their cause. To ensure they keep hold of their other top players like Jarrad Branthwaite, they are willing to sacrifice Onana.
While Barcelona were keen on his signature, Romano suggests the Catalan giants won’t make an offer for his signature as they are completely focused on bringing Nico Williams to the club. With the Spanish giants cooling their interest, Aston Villa have the perfect opportunity and they are surely taking advantage of it.
Aston Villa to agree a £50 million for Onana
As per a report from The Athletic, Emery’s team are close to agreeing a deal worth around £50 million to prise him away from Everton. They are in the process of finalising an agreement with the club having already agreed personal terms with the Belgian international over a long-term contract.
With Douglas Luiz no longer at the club, Emery is keen on having enough quality in the midfield as they prepare to compete in the Champions League. The player is enthusiastic about playing under the Spanish manager and as things stand, the transfer is very close.
