Newcastle United interested in Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in acquiring the services of OH Leuven left-winger Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson.

According to Sunday Mirror via TBR Football, Newcastle United are looking at ways to reinforce their squad, and they have their eyes on Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson, who recently impressed everyone with his performances against England at Wembley.

Thorsteinsson was a part of the Fulham youth ranks back in the day. But, things did not work out for him at the English club as he failed to break into their first team. He left the club back in 2019 and has been playing his football in Belgium since the summer of 2022.

Thorsteinsson is on the radar of top clubs

In the 2023/24 season, the 25-year-old Iceland international contributed towards 14 goals (seven goals, seven assists) in his 40 outings. While these are not outstanding numbers, he has been a consistent performer for OH Leuven, and there is interest in his services from the Premier League on the back of his performances in a recent friendly against England.

The Three Lions squared up against Iceland days before the start of the Euros. Against all odds, the visitors managed to stun the home crowd at Wembley as one of the favourites for Euro 2024 ended up suffering a 1-0 defeat. Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson scored the winner for Iceland and his performance has raised his profile and there is a lot of interest in him.

Newcastle United want Thorsteinsson

Newcastle United are one of the clubs keen on signing the 25-year-old. The Magpies are looking to add depth to their squad as they look to make a return to Europe next term. While they already have quality options on both flanks, Eddie Howe feels Thorsteinsson’s ability to feature anywhere in attack could do wonders for them.

He could be an ideal cover for their first-choice forwards. As a result, Newcastle United are considering making a move for him. But, signing the Iceland international might not be that straightforward as there is interest from West Ham United and Leicester City.

The Foxes have an advantage as OH Leuven are their sister club. The 37-cap Iceland international dreams of making a return to England and playing in the English top flight. As a result, this is one to keep an eye on.
