Liverpool initiate move to sign Waldemar Anton

Liverpool have reportedly shown an interest in signing VfB Stuttgart’s Waldemar Anton, with the defender available for €22.5 million this summer.

According to Sport Bild, Liverpool are interested in signing Waldemar Anton ahead of the summer, with the defender impressing with his fine performances for VfB Stuttgart during the previous campaign. The centre-back has a €22.5 million release clause in his contract, which will be seen as favourable by the Merseysiders.

Liverpool are keen on Waldemar Anton?

Waldemar Anton was one of the key performers for VfB Stuttgart during the previous season, as the Bundesliga’s surprise package finished second on the table, a point above Bayern Munich. While Bayer Leverkusen won the Bundesliga after an unbeaten campaign and took all the plaudits, Stuttgart’s performance should not be disregarded.

However, as a consequence of their amazing performances throughout the season, Stuttgart are in real danger of losing some of their notable performers. For instance, main striker Serhou Guirassy is pencilled in for a departure owing to the modest £17.5 million release clause, as a host of Premier League sides are keen.

Defender Hiroki Ito has attracted the interest of Tottenham, and he also has a €30 million release clause, with Bayern Munich set to sign him. Now, fellow centre-back Waldemar Anton is also the subject of big interest coming from the Premier League, as Liverpool had reportedly enquired about the German international around two weeks ago.

Now, they are keen on signing him, especially after learning the €22.5 million release clause in his contract. Liverpool are keen on signing a centre-back after losing Joel Matip as a free agent, and a replacement will need to be in place. The 27-year-old centre-back could be a brilliant addition, especially after he was named in the German squad for the Euros on home soil.

Liverpool are looking for a new defender

While various reports have linked Liverpool with a left-footed option, stating that Arne Slot wants Goncalo Inacio, they are also probably looking for a right-sided defender. Virgil van Dijk’s future remains in significant doubt, while Matip has already left.

The Reds are also keen on Leny Yoro. However, Liverpool will face massive competition in signing the teenage sensation. But signing someone like Anton would make more sense in the short to medium term, with the centre-back only coming into his prime and carrying a modest release clause to see the whole operation as an investment of sorts in the squad.
