Joe Gomez is reportedly considering a surprise exit from Liverpool in the summer, which could complicate the client’s summer plans.
According to Anfield Watch, Joe Gomez might consider a surprise exit from Liverpool in the summer in search of a new challenge. Despite playing an essential role for the club over the years, the 26-year-old utility man might leave, thus complicating the club’s plans for the summer.
Joe Gomez considering Liverpool exit?
Joe Gomez was never expected to become a sure starter for Liverpool during the entire reign of Jurgen Klopp. In fact, he was the sole survivor during the Germans’ nine years at the club, as he was part of the squad the manager inherited when he took over.
This season, Klopp has used the 26-year-old utility man in all the positions across the backline, with Gomez making 49 appearances in all competitions. The defender is now reportedly considering a surprise exit from Liverpool, as he might seek a new challenge where he has a more permanent role.
The report insists he could lean towards a return to London and might have a few proper suitors angling for a move. Liverpool may not expect a hefty fee in return but will expect to fetch at least something closer to his £20 million-plus valuation, as Gomez has plenty of qualities that suit any modern Premier League side.
His exit might be off the agenda for incoming boss Arne Slot, who may have valued his qualities, but there are already links to Lutsharel Geetrruida, who is a similar player to Gomez. Should the 26-year-old utility man leave the club, it may complicate their plans for a defensive overhaul to a degree, but he’s someone the Merseysiders will have few problems replacing.
Liverpool’s defensive plans for the summer
Liverpool is facing an essential summer ahead, as they have plans to revamp their backline. Joel Matip is set to leave, while Virgil van Dijk’s future has been cast into doubt, although the former’s impending departure will make the club sign at least one centre-back. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Willian Pacho remains a target alongside Sporting CP’s Goncalo Inacio.
They have also set sights on Piero Hincapie, and there are many more names on their list, including a few full-back options ahead of the summer. Hence, should they part ways with Gomez as well, they might have to find another defender that suits their style as well as that of new boss Slot.
