Barcelona are interested in Manchester United star Mason Greenwood
Manchester United star Mason Greenwood is one of the brightest players to come out of their academy in recent years and has now attracted the attention of Spanish champions Barcelona.
The Englishman was one of the best young players on the Red Devils roster before unsavoury allegations threatened to derail his career. The clamour for the club to take a stance had become so much last summer that United opted to send him away on loan to Getafe.
In footballing terms, it has proven to be an inspired decision as Greenwood continues to wow onlookers in La Liga. With five goals and four assists in 15 games, the 22-year-old is once again putting his name out there for the right reasons.
According to The Sun, Getafe are keen to make the deal permanent but Barcelona too have now thrown their name into the ring. The Spanish champions lost Ousmane Dembele last summer and could do with a dynamic wideman who can cause havoc in the final third.
Ansu Fati is currently on loan at Brighton while Raphinha has enjoyed mixed success. Lamine Yamal is a top talent but at 16 cannot shoulder the burden of expectations at the Camp Nou. Bringing in Greenwood will give Xavi Hernandez an experienced yet young alternative who can fulfil a role all along the frontline.
The Catalans are eyeing a deal worth £40million while also offering Lionel Messi’s number 10 jersey as a sweetener. Ansu Fati held the jersey prior to his departure to Ther Amex but he hasn’t quite met the expectations some had of him at the Nou Camp.
Barcelona might have won the La Liga title last season but the lack of a maestro in the mould of Messi is clear in the squad. This has often cost them dear in games against top opposition. Greenwood isn’t quite near Messi’s level but in terms of football ability, he is as good a prospect as any in world football.
Barcelona have had their own share of controversies in recent years. Whether they are willing to shoulder the backlast that comes from signing Greenwood and whether his ability on the field makes up for the issues off it remains to be seen.
