Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Arsenal star Jakub Kiwior
Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are keen to add Arsenal centre-back Jakub Kiwior to their roster as we head into 2024. This is according to the Spanish publication Fichajes.
The 23-year-old Polish international joined the Gunners in 2023 from Spezia and has made 21 appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side. A versatile player, he can also do a job as a left-back or as a defensive midfielder if needed.
However, Kiwior has struggled to nail down a starting spot and is largely used in rotation. Gabriel and William Saliba form the first-choice pairing at The Emirates and show little signs of surrendering their roles. Kiwior is in a position in his career where he should be playing regularly, something that is not on the immediate horizon in north London.
With the January transfer window approaching, Atletico could offer the Polish star an escape route. Diego Simeone is keen to add to his defensive options in the Spanish capital and Kiwior is on the La Liga side’s radar.
A solid defensive line has been the cornerstone of Atletico’s playing style under their Argentine boss. However, chinks have appeared this season, necessitating the need for the infusion of new blood.
While he might not be the best tackler in the business, Kiwior is a strong competitor who excels in interceptions. His style is yet to take off in the Premier League but could fly in the Spanish top flight given its less combative nature.
Arsenal might or might not be averse to parting ways with Kiwior next summer but a January exit appears unlikely. Given that the Gunners are aiming for a first Premier League title under Arteta, they will be keen to keep the squad intact. While Kiwior is not an automatic starter, he offers precious strength in depth, something that will prove crucial in the business end of the season.
Decisions will need to be made in the coming months at both Atletico and Arsenal. Which roster Kiwior be will at remains to be seen.
