Everton are looking at a possible deal for Southampton’s experienced goalkeeper, Alex McCarthy, to shore up the position.
According to Football Insider, Everton could explore a move for Southampton’s unwanted goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. The experienced Englishman has lost his place to his younger colleague Gavin Bazunu at St. Mary’s and could look forward to returning to the top flight.
Everton are feeling pressure from everywhere after a recent verdict that published them for financial wrongdoings. By that, we mean they breached the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules and exceeded the prescribed limits of losses.
As a result, Everton were docked 10 points with immediate effect, which threw them back into the relegation zone. Going by the quality of the other teams around them at the foot of the table, there is every confidence the Toffees would ensure safety at the end of the season.
Sean Dyche would like help in the transfer window. But amid a shortage of funds, he must remain mindful of his resources ahead of January. There is already talk of a big sale, with Amadou Onana one of their prized assets.
If Everton can bring in some funds, they can manage a few good signings to shore up Dyche’s cause for the remainder of the season. Among those needed, the manager is reportedly looking at a backup goalkeeper for Jordan Pickford.
As a result, Southampton’s experienced Englishman Alex McCarthy has come into the picture, with the 33-year-old no longer starting games for the Saints. His younger colleague and Republic of Ireland international Gavin Bazunu remains the undisputed No.1 at St. Mary’s.
McCarthy is unwanted at Southampton and will enter the final 18 months of his deal in January. He did attract some interest from clubs like Manchester United back in the summer and was one of the options for the backup to Andre Onana.
Similarly, Crystal Palace also considered him a possible replacement for Vicente Guaita. Overall, all those who wanted him in the summer only saw him as a backup to their first-choice stopper. Everton are in a similar boat for the experienced Englishman in January. Hence, if McCarthy moves to Everton in January, he will only play backup to Pickford.
The only positives with this move are a potential return to the top flight and the chance to play in the FA Cup. As for Dyche, he may look at McCarthy’s experience as a significant factor, especially if the Toffees lose Pickford to an injury during the season, as Joao Virginia may not be as equipped as the Southampton man.
