Tottenham Hotspur scout Marcus Edwards

Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly scouting Marcus Edwards during Sporting CP’s defeat against Benfica in the Lisbon Derby.

A report from 90 Min claims that Tottenham scouts were in attendance when Sporting CP crashed to a derby defeat on Sunday night. Marcus Edwards was reportedly one of the players they were keeping tabs on.

The former Tottenham Hotspur winger has been linked with a return to the Premier League club in the past as well and it remains to be seen whether Tottenham decide to make a move for him in the coming months.

Edwards has been a key player for Sporting CP and he has three goals and four assists to his name across all competitions. The 24-year-old is capable of operating as a winger as well as an attacking midfielder. He could prove to be a quality acquisition for Tottenham, but the North London club might struggle to give him regular game time.

They have signed James Maddison from Leicester City during the summer transfer window, and the England international is the first-choice attacking midfielder at the club. In addition to that, they have brought in Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest as well. Edwards will struggle to play regularly in his natural role and it remains to be seen how the situation develops.

The player has been linked with a return to the Premier League and he will need to join the club where he will play regularly. If Tottenham cannot provide him with regular game time, a return to his boyhood club might not be ideal for him.

Tottenham could certainly use more depth in their attack and it remains to be seen how the situation develops. The London outfit should look to focus on a quality goal scorer instead.

They have not been able to replace the goalscoring output of Harry Kane yet and signing a reliable finisher could prove to be a wise decision. Edwards will certainly hope to prove himself in the Premier League in the coming years and it remains to be seen where he ends up.
