David Ornstein claims Ivan Toney unlikely to leave Brentford in January

Ivan Toney has been linked with a move away from Brentford ahead of the January transfer window, with Arsenal and Tottenham keen.

Clubs like Arsenal and Tottenham are reportedly keen on signing Ivan Toney. But they have now been dealt a blow in their pursuit of the 27-year-old. Reputed journalist David Ornstein has revealed that the 27-year-old striker is unlikely to leave Brentford midway through the season.

There have been rumours that the Englishman is valued at £100 million. But Ornstein believes that the price tag is a figment of imagination and that Brentford have not set an asking price for their star striker. Toney has a contract with Brentford until the summer of 2025, and Ornstein believes that a free transfer away from the club could be on the cards when his contract expires with Brentford at the end of next season.

The journalist added that Arsenal have already spent substantial amounts of money recently and will have to adhere to the Financial Fair Play regulations. If Brentford demand a premium for the 27-year-old striker, the Gunners might struggle to reach an agreement.

Ornstein said, “He’s had a contract in the summer of 2025 so I think currently it’s looking less likely he’ll move in January, maybe more likely in the summer. But I’ve been advised not to rule out free agency the summer after next so watch this space on that. When you look at the options, Arsenal of course Financial Fair Play [FFP] problems and when they do get money, they’re going to need to spend that on David Raya.”

“Chelsea do want an attacker but is he the right age and profile? I don’t think he is high on their list at the moment, contrary to reports. Manchester United – the ownership situation and the lack of clarity there. Tottenham is worth watching but I would say they’re doing very well as things stand and we’ll see that live against Chelsea tomorrow night.”

It will be interesting to see if Arsenal and Tottenham can convince Brentford to sell their star striker in January. The 27-year-old will certainly want to compete at a high level, and the opportunity to play for the two London clubs could be hard to turn down.

Arsenal need to bring in a reliable goalscorer and Toney would be a solid acquisition. He is a proven performer in the Premier League and should add a new dimension to their attack. Gabriel Jesus has been a key player for Arsenal, but he has not been a prolific goalscorer. The North London giants could certainly use more quality in the final third.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur will have to bring in a quality goalscorer who can replace Harry Kane properly. Richarlison was expected to replace the England international decision, but his performances have been rather underwhelming. Signing the 27-year-old Brentford striker would be a quality investment.
