Ben Jacobs reveals that Manchester United are unwilling to bring back David De Gea
According to Ben Jacobs on GiveMeSport, Premier League giants Manchester United are unlikely to re-sign goalkeeper David De Gea who is currently a free agent.
The veteran was the undisputed number one at Old Trafford for over a decade and was one of the last players left from Sir Alex Ferguson’s Premier League-winning side in 2013. Having been allowed to move on after his contract expired in the summer, De Gea is yet to sign for another club and is still a free agent.
His replacement at the Theatre of Dreams, Andre Onana has endured a difficult start to life as a Manchester United player. While he did save a last-gasp penalty against FC Copenhagen in the UEFA Champions League earlier in the week, the jury is still out on whether he is the right man for the job.
While Onana continues to enjoy Erik ten Hag’s patronage, the Cameroonian will be unavailable midway through the season when he will be away for the African Cup of Nations. The Red Devils do have Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton but neither has the same personality or ability as Onana, despite his struggles.
Manchester United were linked with a surprise move for De Gea, who could have been brought in to cover for Onana during his absence. However, Jacobs has now poured cold water on it.
He revealed that De Gea is still bitter at the way he was forced out of the club in the summer. The player had already committed his future to the club before Manchester United went back on their word. One would think that a celebrated veteran would be treated in a better fashion.
Jacobs goes on to add that as far as both parties are concerned, their relationship has reached its conclusion and there is no chance of a reunion anytime soon. Several players in the United dressing room were also unhappy with the way De Gea was treated and reopening those old would be unwise.
The 32-year-old enjoyed a fine run at Old Trafford but that chapter of his career is now over. Both sides are better off letting sleeping dogs lie.
