Manchester United will have to sell to buy in January

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United will have to offload players in the winter transfer window before making any new signings.

According to a report by Football Insider, Manchester United are planning to offload two of their players in order to raise funds to sign new players in January. The Red Devils can only make new signings after selling players that are surplus to requirement.

United have spent a decent amount on new transfers since the arrival of Erik ten Hag at the club. Over the past three transfer window, they have spent millions on new signings. While they did manage to have a decent season last time out, things haven’t gone according to plan in the new season.

The Red Devils have already lost six games in the 2023-24 season. They have managed to win just four out of their first 10 outings. It has been one of the worst starts to the season for the Manchester-based club.

As a result, they have already started planning for the winter transfer window to improve the situation. Ten Hag wants to sign a new winger and a central midfielder in January.

The Dutch manager wanted to make more signings in the summer. But, he had a limited budget to work with and selling players was the only way to reinvest into the squad. They used the majority of their funds in signing Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund.

While they did offload a few of their players, the Red Devils wanted to cash in on Scott McTominay and ex-captain Harry Maguire. But, they failed to strike a deal for their services. As a result, the duo are still part of the United first team.

However, they are not an important part of Ten Hag’s plans and he is ready to sell them in the winter to raise funds to sign new players. Maguire has only been involved in three matches so far and has been on the pitch for just 116 minutes. Meanwhile, McTominay has featured in five matches and has been on the pitch for just 203 minutes.

The duo are unlikely to play a big part until the turn of the year. And, the Red Devils will then look to sell them in order to have enough funds to push for a new winger and midfielder.
