Roy Kane has backed Aaron Ramsdale to leave Arsenal following David Raya’s arrival.
In a segment of Stick to Football on The Overlap, Manchester United legend Roy Keane has backed Aaron Ramsdale to leave Arsenal in the upcoming 2024 January transfer window.
This comes after the Englishman lost his starting spot to summer signing David Raya in the last few games. The Spaniard is a better distributor of the ball and is arguably a better fit for Mikel Arteta’s system at The Emirates.
Arteta is keen for both of his goalkeepers to compete but Raya appears to be ahead of Ramsdale in the current pecking order. The Spaniard was handed the starting spot against Everton before reprising it in the UEFA Champions League against PSV Eindhoven.
Raya, continuing in goal for the North London derby, also further stated his importance to the project at the Emirates. While Ramsdale is expected to return to action in the Carabao Cup tonight, it does little for his prospects to retake the number one goalkeeper’s spot.
Speaking on the issue, Keane believes that managers have no obligation to keep every single player happy. He goes on to further add that Ramsdale could call it quits in January if he is unhappy with the situation.
He might move on in January and the world won’t come to an end
With the Euros set to be held next summer, Ramsdale will not want to play as a backup goalkeeper. It should more or less end his chances of usurping Jordan Pickford for the starting goalkeeper’s position for England.
However, the 25-year-old could opt to rise to the challenge and wrest back his spot in the first XI at Arsenal. It should hold him in good stead going forward while also making it clear to future competitors that he is not one to be trifled with.
Competition for places is not something new in football. and it is something Ramsdale will need to accept if he is to succeed at a club like Arsenal. There are no free lunches at this level and it is nothing but a case of the survival of the fittest.
