Newcastle United are reportedly set to complete the deadline-day signing of Shrewsbury Town midfield sensation Travis Hernes.
According to the Shropshire Star, Newcastle United are closing in on a deal for highly-rated Shrewsbury midfielder Travis Hernes, who is on Tyneside today to put pen to paper on a deal with the north-east giants.
The Magpies have made five signings ahead of deadline day, with Yankuba Minteh joining before going out on loan to Feyenoord and Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento, and Lewis Hall adding to Howe’s first-team squad.
In total, around £130 million has been splashed by the club plus the £28 million they will be obligated to pay Chelsea for Hall following the end of his loan next summer. Newcastle’s transfer business is understood to be done in terms of first-team signings.
When asked if there would be any further incomings on the deadline-day ahead of the Premier League clash with Brighton & Hove Albion, manager Eddie Howe said, “No, unfortunately. We knew when we signed Lewis we weren’t going to do any more, that was going to be us unless there was a crisis in terms of positions but with Sven it’s just one injury and we don’t think it’s too bad. Squad depth we’re okay in terms of numbers.”
However, it appears that they have one more piece of summer business to be done on Friday, as they look set to sign Norwegian talent Travis Hernes from Shrewsbury Town. The 17-year-old Norway youth international first broke onto the scene last season when he scored in Town’s EFL Trophy campaign against Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-21s.
He has been brought off the bench in two of the club’s League One outings this term, and he also featured against Leeds United in the Carabao Cup last month. The youngster was rewarded with his first professional deal with the third-tier outfit at the start of August.
That contract does not expire until the summer of 2026. But the Shropshire Star now reports the young midfielder is set to join Newcastle after travelling to the North East on Thursday to finalise a deadline-day move.
Shrewsbury have received a 20 percent sell-on clause as part of the deal, with the Shropshire outfit also receiving an undisclosed fee from the Magpies. It is another strong addition to the club’s academy, with Michael Mills, Sam Alabi, Sam Pinnington, Kevin Zefi, and Kacey Wooster arriving at Newcastle over the last number of months.
The Magpies are certainly working hard to ensure that they have a competent first-team for the here and now, but as all elite clubs tend to do, they are bringing in talented youngsters for the academy who they will hope make the grade in the future.
