Tottenham fail with bid to sign Pepe, negotiations continue

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing 26-year-old Brazilian winger Pepe but have had their bid turned down.

A report from Goal claims that Tottenham Hotspur have already failed with a bid to sign Pepe. The North London club remain locked in talks to secure an agreement for the Brazilian. The 26-year-old has a long-term contract with FC Porto, and they will not want to sell him for cheap.

Pepe has been a key player for FC Porto, and Tottenham will have to shell out a premium in order to sign him. Pepe contributed to five goals and ten assists across all competitions for the Portuguese club last season. Tottenham could certainly use someone like him in the wide areas, thus explaining the interest in him.

They will have to replace Harry Kane in the summer, and the England international was more than just a goalscorer for them. The 30-year-old made a huge difference in the final third with his creativity as well. So Tottenham will need to sign multiple players in order to replace his output.

Someone like Pepe will add creativity in the final third. Tottenham should look to bring in a reliable goal scorer as well. It remains to be seen whether Spurs decide to come forward with an improved offer to sign the Brazilian in the next few days.

The North London outfit will have to improve their attack before the summer transfer window closes. They cannot expect someone like Richarlison to step up and replace someone like Kane all by himself.

Dejan Kulusevski is not a prolific goalscorer either, while Son Heung Min had an underwhelming campaign last year. Ideally, Tottenham should look to bring in a couple of attackers before the window closes.

The opportunity to move to Tottenham will be an attractive one for Pepe, and he is likely to be tempted. The Brazilian is at the peak of his powers right now and he will look to make his mark in the Premier League. It remains to be seen whether Porto are more receptive to the improved offer when it arrives from the Premier League club.
