Barcelona lead race to sign Roberto Firmino

Barcelona are ahead of Real Madrid in the race to land Liverpool star Roberto Firmino.

According to Fichajes, Spanish champions Barcelona are leading the race to land outgoing Liverpool star Roberto Firmino in the upcoming summer transfer window. The experienced striker is also a target for several other clubs, including Real Madrid.

The Brazilian has been a key cog in Jurgen Klopp’s roster and was instrumental in the Reds’ winning all the major honours over the last eight years. Firmino also scored on his final appearance for Liverpool at Anfield, salvaging a 1-1 draw vs Aston Villa.

A packed Anfield gave him an unforgettable sending-off after full-time, a true testament to his standing in the game. While the chapter on Merseyside is coming to an end, the 31-year-old’s footballing career is far from over.

A smart player who has the ability to make things happen for not just himself. But those around him, Firmino has several years left in him. A move abroad appears likely with Barcelona and Real Madrid interested.

The Catalan giants are looking for a striker who can back up Robert Lewandowski and are eyeing Firmino as a potential addition. Signing a player of his ability on a free is a coup, given what it will add to the roster.

Firmino is not just a capable goalscorer but can also don the role of a number 10, dropping deeper to get the ball. This ability to link the midfield to the attack makes him an invaluable addition to a manager who knows his marbles.

More so, the Brazilian has experience performing in the biggest games and has made a habit of scoring key goals. Few can, after all, forget his performances at the Club World Cup in 2019. Barcelona lacked such difference makers in Europe last season, leading to several embarrassing results.

With the club’s financial position not the best and talks of a Lionel Messi return on the cards, it is debatable if the Catalans can splurge the cash on Vitor Roque. Firmino is a far more accomplished player available for free. He will not be short of offers and unless Barcelona move quickly, they might end up rueing their decision.

The Liverpool star has plenty of football left in him and can be a valuable asset for most top sides in Europe, including Barcelona and Real Madrid. And while Los Blancos remain keen, the Blaugrana lead  the race to sign him. Time will tell if it is Barcelona who will benefit from his Anfield exit.
