Liverpool ready to offload Joe Gomez this summer

Liverpool are ready to part ways with Joe Gomez in the summer transfer window.

According to Ryan Taylor via GiveMeSport, Premier League giants Liverpool are ready to part ways with centre-back Joe Gomez in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The English international was signed during the Brendan Rodgers era and has been one of the few players to survive Jurgen Klopp’s revamps in recent years. The Englishman, who is on £95,000-a-week wages, has made 172 appearances for the Reds, scoring six goals in the process across all competitions.

Gomez is an excellent player on his day but has struggled with injuries during his time on Merseyside. He has missed 141 games due to injury, a massive number that has often stopped him from putting up a consistent run of strong performances.

The arrival of Ibrahima Konate has seen Gomez fall down the pecking order, and he is arguably the club’s fourth-choice centre-back at this moment. With a summer of change coming, Liverpool appear set to end their association.

Newcastle United are among the clubs interested in the player and could convince Liverpool to part ways with the right offer. Gomez is entering his prime and will benefit from regular playing time, something that he is unlikely to receive at Liverpool.

With Joel Matip also likely to leave, and Virgil van Dijk regressing, Liverpool can, however, ill afford to restructure their defence this summer. With the midfield taking precedence, it remains to be seen if another centre-back will be brought in.

A versatile player, Gomez is capable of playing anywhere along the backline, offering Jurgen Klopp options when needed. More so, the £95,000-a-week star also adds to the club’s homegrown quota, something that needs addressing next summer.

With James Milner and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain also leaving, Liverpool will be further pressed to sign English players in the summer. Gomez’s contract at Anfield runs until 2027 and there are few better backup defenders Liverpool can bring in on the cheap.

The Reds will be better served to retain the 25-year-old and to help him work on his fitness and technical ability in pre-season. Gomez still has a long career ahead of him and selling him next summer would be a premature decision.
