According to Mundo Deportivo via Sport Witness, Tottenham will have to pay €15-20 million for Clement Lenglet to sign him permanently. The Barcelona ace remains in north London on loan. But the Catalans could open the doors over an exit in the summer.
Clement Lenglet was seen as an opportunity for Tottenham to strengthen their defence, and Antonio Conte readily urged the club to sign him. Like any other signings in the recent past, Spurs only agreed on a loan move for the Frenchman from cash-strapped Barcelona.
The Catalans were happy to let the Frenchman depart since they signed Jules Kounde from Sevilla in a big money deal. Lenglet took no time to settle into Conte’s system and has been a mainstay in the first team for large parts. While he could not help them conquer major honours, he’s still considered one of their better players in an otherwise terrible season.
Tottenham had considered signing him permanently long ago but wanted to take a firm decision later in the season. They may have made their mind up about the 27-year-old Barcelona ace and could open talks about the deal.
Lenglet has featured 24 times in the Premier League and will return to Barcelona at the end of the season. However, there’s no place in Catalonia for the 27-year-old, meaning he may have to find a new home. Moreover, the Spanish giants will not hesitate to accept offers that improve their financial situation.
Barcelona are ready to sell Lenglet, among other stars, and could demand a significant sum in return. The report insists Tottenham may have to pay around €15-20 million for the Frenchman, which seems reasonable for a seasoned 27-year-old centre-back.
Spurs will enter the market for further defensive reinforcement but value the seniority and experience of Lenglet in their setup. However, the final decision must be Barcelona’s and the player’s. In hindsight, the money seems decent for the defender who remains out of favour at Camp Nou.
However, if Lenglet rejects the idea of a different club, Tottenham’s pursuit will become complicated. Moreover, following the defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League, Spurs can no longer qualify for the Champions League, which may also become a big factor not only for Lenglet but other high-profile targets.
Ideally, Lenglet could cement his place and become a regular with Spurs next season, but he may wait for other offers from Champions League playing clubs. Financially Spurs could manage the 27-year-old Barcelona ace’s expectations. But they might fall short on the sporting side of things.
