Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is set to sign a new contract with the club in the coming months.
A report from ESPN claims that Manchester United are close to agreeing on a new deal with 32-year-old Spanish international David de Gea. And he is unlikely to leave the club at the end of the season.
David de Gea’s original contract expires in the summer, and there have been rumours that he could look to move on as a free agent. However, the Red Devils are keen on keeping him at the club, and the Spaniard is open to staying as well. According to reports, the goalkeeper will accept a pay cut and sign a new contract with the Red Devils.
Even if the 32-year-old had refused an extension, Manchester United had the option to trigger a one-year extension in the player’s contract. Therefore, the Red Devils would not have lost the player on a free transfer in any case.
The Spanish international has been a key player for Manchester United since joining the club from Atletico Madrid back in 2011, and he has helped him with multiple trophies. He could continue to be an important first team player for the Red Devils in the coming season.
Manchester United have been linked with a number of goalkeepers in recent weeks, and it remains to be seen whether manager Erik ten Hag is willing to bring in a young goalkeeper to complement David de Gea. Dean Henderson is expected to leave the club at the end of the season in search of regular playing time.
Although de Gea has been inconsistent from time to time, he remains a top-quality goalkeeper on his day, and he could be a valuable member of the Manchester United dressing room, because of his winning experience, mentality and leadership qualities.
Manager Erik ten Hag tends to prefer goalkeepers with better distribution skills. So the 32-year-old Spaniard will have to improve in the department if he wants to hold down a regular starting spot at Old Trafford in the coming seasons. There is no doubt that he is a top-class shot-stopper. But he needs to add more composure to his game when it comes to passing out from the back.
Manchester United have shown significant improvement this season, and they are expected to challenge for major trophies next season. They could certainly use David de Gea’s winning experience and the Spaniard could make a big difference for them.
