West Ham United enter race to sign Newcastle United target Scott McTominay

West Ham United have joined Newcastle United in the chase for Scott McTominay, who could quit Manchester United in the summer.

According to Football Insider, West Ham United are chasing Scott McTominay, joining Newcastle United in the hunt. The 26-year-old Manchester United star could eye a change of scenery in the summer and join a team where he can feature regularly.

Scott McTominay has lost his starting spot in the Manchester United side since the arrival of Erik ten Hag. The Scotland international continues to have a modest season and recently went on a scoring spree, including the goal against Everton at the weekend.

His presence in the squad continues to hold weight in ten Hag’s mind. But the Dutchman sees the 26-year-old Manchester United star more as a squad player. McTominay adds value by bringing quality depth to the Red Devils; he wants to cement a regular role.

Since the summer arrivals of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro, McTominay was consistently seen as a bench option. The recent suspensions of Casemiro and the injury to the Danish star brought the 26-year-old Manchester United star into the limelight, thus gaining several appearances from the start.

However, McTominay is reportedly ready to quit Manchester United in search of a new challenge where he plays regularly. The Red Devils will look for a sizeable fee if the midfielder decides to depart in the summer.

He does have a considerable following of other Premier League sides, with Newcastle United one of the interested parties. Eddie Howe had his sights set on the midfielder in January. But Manchester United had no interest in letting him go to a direct rival for the top four places.

Newcastle United’s squad screams for a player of McTominay’s profile, where Howe can nurture his talents correctly. The Magpies have competition for the 26-year-old Manchester United star, with West Ham United keen on signing him alongside two other Red Devils stars.

Whether or not David Moyes survives beyond the current campaign, they might lose Declan Rice in the summer. Hence there’s a clear vacancy in midfield for the Hammers to fill in, and McTominay could become that replacement.

For that to happen, West Ham must ensure their safety from relegation first, then think about strengthening their squad. He could have a good career in London, but Newcastle may come across as a more progressive option for his liking.

As things stand, McTominay would have known Manchester United’s intention to sign another midfielder or two in the window. Hence, he will feel threatened about playing regularly in this team so that a move could materialise. Where he goes remains the question, but he will have several high-profile options in the summer.
