AC Milan have rekindled their interest in Tottenham’s unwanted defender Japhet Tanganga as an exit looms large for the versatile 23-year-old.
According to Calciomercatoweb, AC Milan could return to Tottenham for Japhet Tanganga. The Rossoneri are about to rekindle their interest in the versatile 23-year-old defender, who may not have a future in north London beyond the current season.
AC Milan ended Tottenham’s dream in the Champions League as they went through to the quarter-finals of the competition courtesy of a goalless draw in north London. The result gave Milan fans some joy in a season that has been otherwise terrible with regards to their title defence.
Whether or not Stefano Pioli stays beyond the summer, the club will try to achieve few transfer objectives that fall within their means. A part of the agenda would involve bringing in a young defender who could grow into a leader in the later years.
Milan need a new defender to shore up their backline. Names like Samuel Umtiti have got a mention. But the experienced Frenchman may not be seen as an ideal recruit as per their recent change in policies. Japhet Tanganga just might, and the Serie A giants could rekindle their interest in the Tottenham man.
AC Milan and AS Roma were rumoured to have kept tabs in the versatile 23-year-old defender last summer. Tottenham could not agree on a move, and Tanganga remained in north London, hoping to impress Antonio Conte to give him more chances in the first team.
As it turned out, Tanganga has played a grand total of two Premier League games, starting both. Even the proximity of those two appearances had a large gap. The first one was the Boxing Day draw at home to Brentford, which was largely due to the unavailability of players right after the World Cup.
The second was Tottenham’s terrible loss to Leicester City last month, after which Tanganga has barely featured anywhere near the first team. The right path for the versatile 23-year-old defender would point towards moving out of north London and join a club where he could play regularly.
Fikayo Tomori’s career path may provide Tanganga with inspiration as Milan have proven their worth of developing young English talents before. The current Rossoneri defender has had a successful time at San Siro, which also earned him his England call up.
Tanganga is not as good as Tomori, but he could certainly develop his game away from Tottenham. Milan believe in his talents and feel he could improve as a player here under their conditions. The Serie A giants are also keeping tabs on several other outcasts in the Premier League including Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Tanganga has a contract until 2025, which Milan will hope helps them to get a better deal with Spurs when they open talks. The versatile 23-year-old defender’s future certainly lies away from Tottenham, and he could depart at the end of the season.
