Newcastle United have submitted an enquiry about the availability of AS Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo.
As per Corriere Dello Sport, Newcastle United are eyeing a summer move for AS Roma sensation Nicolo Zaniolo. The 23-year-old hasn’t had the kind of season he would have expected and could look for a new challenge in the upcoming days.
Newcastle have maintained their ruthless run as they are steamrolling all their opponents in the Premier League. The title charge doesn’t really seem obvious at this moment but they will definitely fight for a place in the Champions League.
The Magpies’ takeover has made them an interesting prospect and it has coincided with their excellent form. Their wealthiest owner already bankrolled a hefty summer budget and another expensive summer transfer window is in the offing.
Zaniolo is currently diagnosed with flu and but he could be ready in time for Roma’s weekend fixture with Spezia. His refusal to sign a new contract attracted ire from one section of supporters but the player is adamant in his stance.
He has been looking for a contract worth €4 million per season and Newcastle can offer him a hike over his current demands. The Italian hasn’t really justified his talent over the last couple of seasons as injuries played spoilsport to his development.
Roma had asked for €50 million last year when clubs were circling around him but his contractual length and his current form will force the club to reduce the value drastically.
He will have sufficient time to prove his worth and could raise his stock with a string of good performances. He is adept at playing as an attacking midfielder while he is equally comfortable on the flanks.
But he has managed just one goal in the Italian top flight and the club might be looking to offload the player if he fails to improve his form. Tottenham Hotspur have also been monitoring his progress as Antonio Conte is believed to be an avid admirer of his fellow countryman.
Arsenal have lost Mykhaylo Mudryk to Chelsea and can shift their focus to Zaniolo who is a slightly different kind of player. The former Inter Milan academy product seems destined to make a big move soon and the North Londoners could be that club.
But Newcastle are leading the chase currently and a potential move could happen next summer.
