Manchester United are plotting a surprise swoop for AC Milan forward Olivier Giroud in the winter transfer window.
As per a report in the Times, AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud has emerged as a candidate for Manchester United as they have been in search of an out-and-out number nine.
There are very few conventional strikers than Giroud at the moment currently but the French international has already hit the twilight of his career. The 36-year-old is still going strong in the Serie A and has scored on five occasions in 13 matches this term.
He also was Didier Deschamps’ preferred choice in the recently concluded World Cup and continued to provide the service for his country. The former Arsenal striker had a six-year spell in North London before moving to Chelsea where he went on to lift the Champions League later.
Time and again Erik ten Hag has maintained the stance that he will need another forward to cope with the piling up of fixtures and Giroud can definitely help him with that.
“I think we have a good team when all the players are available. But with many games coming up, I think there is a need [for a striker]. But you need one who can have an impact, otherwise you are just burning money and you don’t strengthen the squad and it doesn’t help you.”
With significant Premier League experience under his belt, the forward is also known for his link-up play and he could prove to be a definite outlet of goals for them. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are not natural strikers and Giroud’s aerial prowess can also be of further assistance if he does arrive at the club.
He has six months left on his current contract but the Italian giants are unlikely to offer the player fresh terms and it is suggested the player could be on his way to the MLS next summer.
United haven’t really put out their attention for Giroud but should an opportunity arise the former Gunners forward could be a shrewd buy this month.
