Aston Villa to be offered chance to sign Jannik Vestergaard

Aston Villa could explore signing Jannik Vestergaard in January as Unai Emery seeks defensive reinforcements to his squad.

According to Football Insider, Jannik Vestergaard is a target for Aston Villa in January. Unai Emery wants central defensive signings to bolster his backline, and the Leicester City star is offered as an option alongside other targets.

Aston Villa suffered a blow early in the season when Diego Carlos was ruled out with a significant injury. The Brazilian suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon which should keep him out for the remainder of the campaign.

Former manager Steven Gerrard foresaw how the team might perform with the Brazilian in the backline. Due to that injury and other factors which saw Aston Villa endure a disastrous period in the league, the club decided to part ways with the Liverpool legend and appointed Unai Emery as his successor.

The Spanish manager has made a blistering start to life as the Aston Villa boss, as the overall mood around the club seems optimistic. Emery wants to continue with this and bring in necessary players to bolster the squad in January, with a central defender sitting high on the agenda.

Emery wants an experienced player to complement the likes of Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings. The duo has performed well but needs more efficient cover or different options when the manager might need to tweak his style for certain opponents.

Real Madrid’s Nacho Fernandez is also under consideration, but Emery might look to sign someone experienced in the Premier League. There are a few options around that particular market, but much will depend on the acquisition cost.

Leicester City’s Caglar Soyuncu is another option, but the report claims Aston Villa may have the chance to sign his teammate Jannik Vestergaard. The 30-year-old defender is clearly out of favour at the Premier League club and could angle a move away to play regularly.

He rejected an eleventh-hour move to Fulham during the summer, and with no munites under his belt this season in the league, the Danish star could depart. Aston Villa are considering approaching the experienced 30-year-old.

Vestergaard may not be an automatic starter for Aston Villa if they sign him. Instead, Emery will prefer to keep him on as cover and will likely get plenty of game time. Leicester’s asking price will remain a question, and a big factor in making this move happen, as aston Villa may not pay over the odds to sign the 30-year-old defender from their fellow Premier League club.
