Manchester United might have figured out how to plug their goalkeeping issue as they have been linked with a move for Borussia Monchengladbach shot-stopper Yann Sommer.
If a report in Bild is to be believed, United are very close to reaching a deal with Borussia Monchengladbach for the transfer of Yann Sommer in winter. None of United’s current goalkeepers has been in the World Cup and this news could be a hard pill to digest for them.
Erik ten Hag seems to be on the lookout for a new custodian who suits his playing style. His idea of initiating a play from the back hasn’t really suited David de Gea’s natural style and the Spanish goalkeeper has been deemed as a surplus to requirements.
But the 32-year-old has made some very progressive efforts in his stance and the manager also is satisfied with his progress. But with United rebuilding their squad for the future their long-time servant might find it tough to have a place in the team on a consistent basis.
Sommer has been one of the front-line keepers who has been pretty good at his job and has kept his place intact for his Bundesliga club. But his contract is up for expiry next summer and the Germans might be interested to let him leave for a decent amount of money.
It is not sure whether Sommer could be an instant replacement for de Gea or if the management prefers a wait-and-watch policy. There has also been a constant effort to offer de Gea fresh terms but on reduced wages and it could place the keeper in unknown territory.
Sommer is pretty adept with his ball-playing skills and he is at the top of his game currently. Usually, a goalkeeper peaks around the 30-year mark and Sommer has already had some very good years in his pocket.
United have currently three senior goalkeepers in their ranks with Martin Dubravka joining the club on a loan from Newcastle United this summer. It remains to be seen what duty Sommer gets if he does arrive in Manchester.
