Sam Allardyce thinks Harry Maguire needs to leave Manchester United in January while pointing towards a post-World Cup dilemma.
Harry Maguire is having an indifferent season domestically and internationally. While Erik ten Hag seems to have dropped the Manchester United captain from his plans, England manager Gareth Southgate regularly picks him up in his lineups.
The defender has received massive criticism after underwhelming performances for Manchester United. Being the club’s captain, Maguire has always found himself in the centre of the storm whenever the team underwhelms on the pitch.
Since Erik ten Hag took over, the centre-back has steadily gone out of favour and dropped from the Dutchman’s lineups. After Raphael Varane’s injury in recent weeks, the manager has preferred Viktor Lindelof, which has left Maguire considering his long-term future at the club.
A few reports recently insisted Manchester United could consider a sale of the defender, probably in January. A few suitors could be lining up a move but his price tag may prove problematic.
Some stories insisted Manchester United could demand around €30 million for the player they once signed in a world record deal. He remains at Old Trafford and is steadily starting games for England in Qatar.
Former England manager Sam Allardyce urged the centre-back to leave Manchester United as his comments appeared on Football 365 via the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast.
Allardyce said, “Harry Maguire silenced the critics straight away. People say it was only Iran, but it was a big moment for him, everyone was looking at him, and he handled it brilliantly.
“It leaves him in a great dilemma when he comes back to [Manchester] United because if he isn’t going to get picked, he needs to leave.
“He’s certainly proven to everyone in the press, who were trying to pressurise Gareth [Southgate] not to play him and saying he isn’t good enough to play for United or England. He’s proven that is nonsense.”
A good tournament in Qatar could light up interest in the centre-back, who is still considered a prominent figure at Manchester United. There seems to be no space for him in Ten Hag’s plans, so his chances of departing are considerably high.
