Brazilian winger Lucas Moura is ready to leave Tottenham Hotspur as a free agent at the end of the season if talks over a new deal do not progress.
Speaking in a recent interview, Lucas Moura has suggested that he is prepared to walk away as a free agent if Tottenham Hotspur decide not to renew his contract before it expires in the summer.
“If Tottenham want to renew, cool too, a club I like a lot, I’m adapted. Let’s see, let’s hear the renewal proposal. If they don’t want to, I’ll leave for free, and being free, of course, more proposals appear. So it’s a matter of analysing and seeing what we decide.”
Lucas Moura is in the final few months of his contract at Tottenham Hotspur, and there have not been any efforts to renew his deal from the Premier League club so far. It will be interesting to see if Tottenham decide to offer him an extension in the coming months.
The Brazilian winger was the subject of interest from Newcastle United in the summer. Moura will be able to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs from January 1. But he is open to staying at Tottenham if given a chance.
The 30-year-old winger has dropped down the pecking order at Tottenham since the arrivals of Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski. He is no longer a crucial part of Antonio Conte’s first-team plans, and a move away from Tottenham might be beneficial to his career.
The Brazilian is at the peak of his powers right now, and he needs to play regularly at this stage of his career. It is evident that Tottenham cannot provide him with that opportunity right now. Moura has admitted that he needs to join a club where he can play regularly but he will know deep down that Tottenham is not the ideal place for him to continue his career.
“Man, my plan, to be honest, I want to play football and I want to be in a club that allows me to play at a high level, play in a good league, play at a good level. That’s my plan. I still have a lot of firewood to burn, I’m 30 years old, so I’m very young,” Lucas Moura told Flow Sport Club.
The 30-year-old has been an impressive squad player for the London club, and his versatility makes him a great asset. The Brazilian can operate on either flank and he can slot in as a false nine or an attacking midfielder.
He was a key player for Tottenham under former manager Mauricio Pochettino and helped them reach the finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2019. A player of his quality should have no shortage of suitors if he is available at the end of the season. And it will be interesting to see where he ends up if he leaves as a free agent.
