Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has opened up on the pearls of wisdom dished out to him by countryman and former Red Luis Suarez.
As quoted by ESPN, Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has shed light on the advice afforded to him by countryman Luis Suarez following a challenging start to life on Merseyside.
The Uruguayan international made the big-money switch to Anfield in the summer. He got off to a flyer with a match-winning cameo off the bench in the FA Community Shield against Manchester City. He followed it up with another sensational performance in the 2-2 draw away to Fulham on opening day.
Nunez’s momentum was cut short after he received his marching orders against Crystal Palace on his home debut. This saw him get suspended for three games, throwing a dent in his morale and also making him privy to having a loose temper.
One man who is used to it is Suarez, who had his fair share of controversies while in red. The Uruguayan was a handful off the pitch but made up for it with his performances on it. He was without question one of the finest players to grace the Premier League.
Now older and wiser, the veteran urged Nunez to get stronger and not give in to provocation from opposition defenders. It is fair to say that Suarez is channelling his experiences while in England. Nunez, for his part, has received the message clearly and loudly and is thankful for the pearls of wisdom.
“Luis is a reference point, an idol everywhere in the world. I’m getting started, I’m young, and he knows about all those things because he already played in the Premier League with Liverpool.”
Suarez urged Nunez to not fall for the traps like he used to and appears keen for his countryman to be ready to deal with any challenge that comes his way. There will be no shortage of rivals who will look to get under Nunez’s skin. But as long as he keeps his cool and focuses on the game at hand, he can be immovable.
“Luis told me that these things will happen in every game in the Premier League, that they’ll come and find me, that they’re going to bump into me, and that I need to make myself strong and not repeat my screw-up.”
Nunez is slowly yet surely finding his feet in the English game. A player consistently in the spotlight, the 23-year-old has six goals and one assist from 13 games so far for the Reds. The goal return of one every 106 minutes is pretty good and makes a mockery of those doubting his talents.
The Uruguayan striker is starting to show his quality on the pitch and could become a fearsome opponent if he continues to develop and garner confidence. Defenders will continue to gnaw at him, but as long as Nunez continues to win on the pitch, he has little reason to worry.
