Atletico Madrid set sights on David de Gea

Atletico Madrid are considering making a move for Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea amid uncertainty hovering around the future of Jan Oblak.

According to a report by 90 min, Atletico Madrid could reunite with their former custodian David de Gea. The Spanish giants want to make the Manchester United veteran their future number one.

Since the arrival of Erik ten Hag, there have been debates about whether de Gea could match his principles. The Manchester United manager views the goalkeeper as any other outfield player and wants his shot-stopper to be very attentive with the ball at their feet.

The Spanish international can be considered among the legendary keepers. But when it comes to ball playing skills, de Gea does not rank among the top stars. He has been the preferred choice despite his limitations on the ball, but the Manchester United hierarchy is believed to be open to letting the player leave if a suitable offer arrives.

De Gea’s staggering £350,000-a-week wages have also been a cause of headache, as Manchester United hit a record high wage bill. And there will be some steps taken regarding cost cutting, with the 31-year-old a likely victim of that.

La Liga Atletico Madrid are also contemplating the future of Jan Oblak, who reportedly agreed on a new six-year deal, which has not been made official yet. Oblak’s dip in form this season prompted the club to have a second thought, and he could be made available on the market.

Oblak could make his way to Old Trafford, with de Gea heading in the opposite direction and back to La Liga. The 29-year-old has been considered one of the best in business, and Manchester United would surely get an upgrade over their current shot-stopper.

De Gea has entered the last year of his Manchester United contract. And although there is a provision to extend his contract by another year, the club is keeping a keen watch, and the situation might be pretty clear in a few weeks as it stands.

Manchester United won’t let lose their current number one for free, and they might trigger the one-year extension to get a good price for the keeper in near future. It will be interesting to see if de Gea returns to La Liga by rejoining Atletico Madrid anytime soon.
